Draft Cornubia Forest Management Plan

Logan City Council recently purchased "the Logan Escarpment" in 2010 through federal government funding and the Environment Levy to which all ratepayers contribute.

The original "Cornubia Forest Park" was purchased by Council in 1999 through a National Heritage Trust Grant. This entire area of bushland, now 196 hectares, will be protected for the future as Cornubia Forest under a Koala Nature Refuge Agreement with the State Department of Environment and Resource Management.

This area contains numerous ecological and recreational values that are important to protect for both Logan City and the local community.

The Cornubia Forest Management Plan is required to

  • maintain and enhance ecological values,
  • manage bushfire risk,
  • weeds and pests, and
  • provide for and manage recreational uses.

The purpose of this plan is to outline Logan City Council’s overarching approach to managing its conservation areas and then focus on the appropriate management of Cornubia Forest.

Background

In July 2011 Logan City Council held an open day to consult the local community on the options for a draft management plan for Cornubia Forest. The values and opportunities of the Forest were discussed, along with potential threats to it.

Feedback from the open day, and from other submissions during the consultation period, helped shape the draft management plan.
