Logan Housing Company
Council and the Queensland Government Department of Communities are working together to establish an independent, not-for-profit, charitable company to deliver affordable housing in the Logan region.
It is envisaged that the company will perform a key role in revitalising existing social housing in Logan and developing new affordable homes for eligible households to rent or buy.
Why form a Logan Housing Company?
- There is a significant need in Logan for affordable homes to rent and buy.
- Logan’s population is growing. More than one thousand new households are expected each year in the period to 2026.
- There are already approximately 2,000 eligible applicants on the Department of Communities' Social Housing Register in Logan.
- Redevelopment opportunities are emerging due to the current mismatch between the supply of three-bedroom houses on large blocks and the demand for one and two-bedroom accommodation in Logan.
- An independent not-for-profit housing company has the capacity to expand and enhance the supply of affordable housing in Logan in a cost effective and efficient way.
How will the company operate?
- Once established the proposed Logan Housing Company would operate independently of both the Logan City Council and the Department of Communities.
- It is expected that the company would:
- work with existing community stakeholders to deliver services to clients in Logan
- provide both social and affordable rental housing for eligible applicants on the Department of Communities - Social Housing Register for the duration of their need
- become, over time, a developer of affordable housing for rent or purchase, with a particular focus on social housing redevelopment and urban renewal projects.
- The project is still in the early stages and details about location, eligibility and rental costs are yet to be finalised.
