Celebrating 30 years of Neighbourhood Watch

Neighbourhood Watch Queensland has helped to create safer and more cohesive Queensland neighbourhoods since 1988, and to celebrate the volunteer not-for-profit organisation’s 30th anniversary, Logan City Council and Queensland Police Service are hosting a free community barbecue.

Councillor Steve Swenson, City Lifestyle and Community Committee Chairperson, said the event will be held this Saturday (September 1) from noon until 1:30pm at Bethania Community Centre, 88-188 Station Road, Bethania.

“Getting the community together at this free event is a wonderful way to recognise how an active local Neighbourhood Watch Group provides many social and safety benefits,” Cr Swenson said.

“It also gives City of Logan residents the opportunity to learn more about Neighbourhood Watch and how they can get involved in working together to make our neighbourhoods more welcoming, inclusive and safe.

“Neighbourhood Watch is relevant now more than ever and it needs more tech-savvy volunteers in an increasingly digital world. We need to continue to look out for each other, especially as people may feel more connected via technology but physically isolated from their community.

“An active Neighbourhood Watch Group helps strengthen relationships among neighbours. It encourages local families and businesses to work together and promote a healthy and safe environment for the local area’s residents and visitors.”

Ben Marcus, Chief Superintendent of Logan District Police, said Neighbourhood Watch Groups provide a direct contact point between local police and the community.

“We’re are extremely proud of our Neighbourhood Watch teams and the support they have been giving to the Queensland Police Service and the community for the past 30 years,” Chief Superintendent Marcus said.

“We can’t wait to celebrate this significant milestone with them on Saturday and we’re looking forward to continuing to work with them for many more years to come.”
