New security cameras roll out

Logan City Council has reaffirmed its commitment to community safety with the first of three new fixed CCTV safety cameras in Crestmead and Waterford West now operational.

City of Logan Mayor Luke Smith said the new camera at Crestmead Park would be a welcome boost to the award-wining Logan Safety Camera Program.

“This new camera, along with another two set to be operating in the area soon, will extend the reach of our award-winning camera program,” Mayor Smith said.

“This program has a long and successful history of increasing community safety.”

City Lifestyle and Customer Service Committee Chair Cr Steve Swenson said the other two cameras expected to be operational in the coming months were at Mallee St and Waratah Dr in Crestmead, along with a previously announced federally-funded camera outside of Marsden State High School, Waterford West.

“With these cameras, our expert staff are able to work in close partnership with the Queensland Police Service to alert them to suspicious activity or assist in instances where people might be lost,” Cr Swenson said.

Division 9 Councillor Phil Pidgeon said he had strongly advocated for the roll out of more CCTV cameras to Crestmead and surrounds.

“People want to feel safe in our community and this is part of my job in helping our residents to do that,” Cr Pidgeon said.

“The majority of people do the right thing but these cameras are in place to stop illegal or suspicious activity.

“The bottom line is that these new cameras will help us keep the community safe.”

In addition, one of Council’s new rapid deployment mobile safety cameras will be placed in the vicinity of Bumstead, Clarke and Green roads in Crestmead in the coming months.

“Mobile cameras have proven to be an effective way of addressing ‘hot spot’ community safety issues such as hooning and anti-social behaviour,” he said.

There are strict policies, standing orders and operating procedures to ensure integrity, confidentiality and the privacy of the community at all times.

The Logan Safety Camera Program has received numerous awards and commendations for outstanding community safety achievements and has successfully secured millions of dollars in funding contributions from state and federal government agencies.
