Recycling helps lessen State Government waste levy hike
Recycling more is the best way to reduce landfill and lessen the impact of the State Government waste levy.

Logan City Council is urging businesses and residents to increase their recycling efforts as the State Government’s waste levy is introduced on July 1.

Queensland sends 55 per cent of its waste to landfill and is the only state without a waste levy.

Only 45 per cent of waste is Queensland is recycled. Other states where a waste levy has already been introduced have recycling rates closer to 80 per cent.

Logan City Council is one of 33 Local Government areas assigned to collect the new waste levy on behalf of the State Government.

To mitigate any direct impacts of the waste levy on householders, the State Government is providing a rebate to councils for the waste levy costs associated with domestic waste only.

Accordingly, waste rates for bins provided to residential properties and tip fees for domestic waste will not be impacted by the waste levy from July 1.

Logan City Council will once again provide ratepayers of residential properties four free tipping vouchers. These vouchers can only be used to dispose of domestic waste, and cannot be used by commercial customers.

However, waste rates for bins provided to commercial properties and tip fees for commercial waste will increase to accommodate the $75 per tonne waste levy from July 1.

The new commercial tip fees that will apply from 1 July 2019 are:

Browns Plains and Carbrook (vehicles are weighed)

  • Commercial general, construction and demolition waste: $191 per tonne
  • Commercial green waste: $71 per tonne

Greenbank and Logan Village (no weighbridge is available)

  • Small load: commercial general waste $22 / commercial green waste $8
  • Medium load: commercial general waste $70 / commercial green waste $13
  • Large load: commercial general waste $120 / commercial green waste $21

Commercial waste is not accepted at Beenleigh.
