Curious creatures invade Logan libraries for Summer Reading Club
Uncle Barry Watson will read stories from his new book Aboriginal Myths and Legends at the upcoming Summer Reading Club.

The national Summer Reading Club will return to Logan City Council Libraries and online for the upcoming school holidays.

City Lifestyle and Community Committee Chairperson, Councillor Steve Swenson, said the Summer Reading Club was a free interactive program led by State Library of Queensland (SLQ) for children and young people of all ages to instil a love of libraries and reading.

Cr Swenson said the 2018 theme, Curious Creatures, would encourage eager young readers to discover new worlds as they explored and connected with a curiosity of creatures through a range of interactive activities available in libraries and online.

He said Council encouraged the community to embrace the program and
register in person at their local Logan City Council library.

“Each participant will receive a reading log, bookmarks, stickers, temporary tattoo and mask,” Cr Swenson said.

Weekly prizes of LEGO will be up for grabs.

Cr Swenson said the city’s libraries strongly supported the program because it had been proven that access to books was critical for children and that libraries were an excellent free resource for families.

He said encouraging children to keep reading over the school holidays was important.

“It’s been shown that reading just four to six books over the summer has the potential to prevent a decline in reading achievement scores.”
In Logan, the Summer Reading Club will run during school holidays from December 8, 2018 to January 26, 2019.

Highlights at Logan City Council Libraries include:

  • Creative creature workshops with author and illustrator Dr Cameron Stelzer
  • Library after dark: curious creature nights
  • Curious creature craft
  • Animal gliders and curious flying creations workshops

The club will be launched at 3pm on Wednesday, November 28 at Logan Central Library by Uncle Barry Watson who will be sharing his new book Aboriginal Myths and Legends about Dreamtime creatures.

Summer Reading Club members can also meet 21 new Australian authors and illustrators online at, read their helpful creative hints and tips and preview exclusives of their up and coming work.

Award-winning author and illustrator Dr Cameron Stelzer, who is a Logan resident, has been selected as one of the national Summer Reading Club’s featured authors and bloggers.

Logan City Council Libraries will host Creative Creatures workshops at all nine libraries in January 2019 with Dr Stelzer.
