School & Community Waste Education Program

The Watch Out Waste program is a free environmental education program for Logan City schools and community groups delivered by experienced environmental educators.


The Watch Out Waste program includes hands-on activities that are age appropriate. Teachers receive free resources and student worksheets. The program includes:

Tailored in-class presentations. These range from 30 minutes to 1 hour based on the following topics:

  • Waste and Recycling
  • Nature's Recyclers
  • Litter and the Environment
  • Think Food – Rethink Waste
  • Environmental Impacts of Waste (NEW)

Browns Plains Landfill Facility Tours: Each school is entitled to a full day's use of one 60 seater bus per year, free of charge to visit the Browns Plains Landfill for a presentation and behind-the-scenes tour. Tours last for 2 hours and schools can book one or two tours within the day.

Places are limited, so book early to avoid disappointment.

Kindergartens and early learning centres

A two-part Professional Development Workshop Series will provide Early Childhood Education Services with the knowledge, information and resources required to develop and successfully integrate a tailored waste management plan at their Centre.

Community groups

The Watch Out Waste program is also offered to community groups in Logan City.

The program includes:

Group presentations. We offer community groups tailored presentations on the following topics:

  • Waste and Recycling
  • Worm Farming and Composting
  • Think Food – Rethink Waste

Browns Plains Landfill Tours: Community groups can also go on a FREE bus tour of the Browns Plains Landfill facilities. A free 60-seater bus will deliver participants to the Browns Plains Landfill where they will receive an informative presentation at 'The Shack' prior to going on a behind-the-scenes tour of the site including the working landfill and the Recycling Market.

If your group wishes to participate in a Browns Plains Landfill tour, one bus per organisation is available free of charge each year. There is limited parking available on site. Tea and coffee are provided. Please complete the booking form below:

A resource book for English learners

Reducing Waste at Home: A resource book for English learners is aimed at members of the Logan community who have recently arrived in the area and who speak English as a second language. The information and activities included in this resource will help to improve the level of understanding and engagement in Logan City Council’s waste services and assist in improving recycling participation rates, whilst teaching English using real life situations and topics. This resource can be downloaded and printed for the purpose of study, training or learning.
