Australia’s first biosolids gasification facility

Logan Water has pioneered an Australian first biosolids gasification facility. The facility transforms sewage sludge (biosolids) into renewable energy. It also produces a soil conditioner called biochar.

The Loganholme Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) operated a trial biosolids gasification facility during 2020. A permanent facility will be constructed at the WWTP in 2021.

Research into the performance of the trial facility showed that Logan Water’s solution:

  • is heat-energy neutral
  • reduces the amount of biosolids for disposal by around 90%
  • eliminates about 95% of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) like polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and
  • reduces about 63% of micro and nano-plastics in biosolids.

The process does not harm the environment and the resulting biochar contains bio-available nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Biochar also increases the water holding capacity of soil. This helps plants to germinate and grow in the hot Australian climate. This makes biochar suitable for reuse as a soil improver.

Logan Water will investigate commercial opportunities to market biochar in 2021. At present, biochar is not available for sale from Council.

Acknowledgement: The AU$17.28m biosolids gasification trial facility was funded by Council and an AU$6.2m grant from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).

Cedar Grove Environmental Centre

The Cedar Grove Environmental Centre is open daily to the community between 5.30am and 6:30pm (gates are closed at other times).

Community members can visit the site to enjoy:

  • a 2.5km walking track (loop) along the Logan River
  • shaded seating and picnic tables
  • parking, accessible toilets and drinking fountain
  • viewing the Cedar Grove Landcare nursery and training facility (not yet operational).

Access to Cedar Grove Environmental Centre is from Cedar Grove road. There is a public carpark at the end of the access road. Dogs on a leash are allowed but there is no access for motorbikes, horses, fishing or camping.

For general enquiries, please call us on 07 3412 3412. To discuss opportunities for educational tours of the WWTP and wetlands, email the Water Customer Experience and Engagement Team.

Chambers Flat Wastewater Treatment Plant

A new wastewater treatment facility is needed to service new developments between Park Ridge and Yarrabilba in the coming years. The planned facility called the Chambers Flat wastewater treatment plant is proposed to be constructed on Pleasant View Road in Chambers Flat.

Current status

Council is progressing the acquisition of land at Pleasant View Road, Chambers Flat.  An update will be provided to residents toward the end of the year when further information is available.

Community consultation

As Council has not acquired land for the Chambers Flat WWTP, a formal call for nominations for the Community Reference Group will not be called at this stage.

Residents can still express their interest in participating in the Community Reference Group by emailing us at or calling Tania Keelan on 07 3412 9609.

If you have previously expressed interest in joining this group, your details have been kept and the project team will contact you at the appropriate time.
