Logan: City of Choice

Logan: City of Choice is a collaboration involving community, corporates, non-government agencies and all three levels of government. It’s an initiative of Logan City Council, supported by State and Federal Government partners.

The City of Choice Leadership Team supports outcomes where an independent team of thought leaders has capacity to influence key government, business and community stakeholders on matters that are beyond the traditional scope of local government.

There have been two iterations of City of Choice to date:

  • 2013 to 2016
  • 2017 to 2020.

Current status

In 2019 / 20, Council reviewed the initiative and considered its future form and function, given the tenure of the 2017 to 2020 Leadership Team would end in 2020. The review aimed to help inform planning and decisions about the initiative by the incoming Council.

The review highlighted that the City of Choice initiative responds to the following challenge:

  • 'To find the most effective vehicle to address one or more of the complex social challenges in Logan in a way that is sustainable, has formal support from all three levels of government, and through which impact can be measured.'

As a result, the newly elected Council considered a number of options for the initiative. At the General Meeting of 17 June 2020, Council resolved to pursue the option to re-invigorate City of Choice, supported by an MOU of relevant government agencies.

The last meeting of the 2017 to 2020 City of Choice Leadership Team was held on 7 August 2020.

Planning for the next iteration is now under way. At this stage, we expect the refreshed team will launch in the first half of 2021.

City of Choice 2017 to 2019

The newly appointed City of Choice Leadership Team met for the first time on 23 March 2018 and identified the following priorities:

  1. Social housing and precinct renewal
  2. Employment pathways
  3. Holistic support for people with addiction issues
  4. Cultural diversity.

The team is working on responses to these priorities and organising workshops and discussion groups.

The City of Choice Leadership Team includes representatives from:

  • the Australian Government
  • the Queensland Government
  • Logan City Council
  • a range of sector experts.

City of Choice 2013 to 2016

Logan: City of Choice was launched with the Logan: City of Choice Summit in February 2013. More than 1,000 people attended the summit including:

  • business and non-government sector members
  • Council representatives
  • Queensland and Australian Government representatives.

From the summit, we developed the City of Choice Two-Year Action Plan 2013 to 2015 (PDF 5.3 MB).

The Action Plan was formally endorsed by Logan City Council in December 2013. It outlined actions across these key themes:

  • education
  • employment
  • housing
  • safety
  • social infrastructure (including youth)
  • communication and community involvement
  • cultures
  • transport.
