Aged water meter replacement program

We will replace your water meter when it is older than 10 years, or when it has a reading greater than 3,400KL.

To let you know when this is happening, we will leave a card in your letterbox two weeks before we replace your meter.

If the existing pipework is in good condition, it will only take 15 minutes to replace your meter. If the pipework is in poor condition, it may take longer.

The contractor replacing the meter will let you know how long it will take. While the contractor is replacing your meter, your water supply will be turned off.

After we replace the meter, we will leave another card in your letterbox to let you know. This card will include the final reading of you old meter.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Why are you replacing my water meter if my neighbour’s meter is not being replaced and the houses are the same age?

  • Your neighbour's meter may have been installed after your meter. This could be as little as a day after.
  • Your meter may have reached a water consumption of 3,400kL before your neighbour's.
  • Your neighbour’s meter might not be as old as yours if it was replaced due to a maintenance issue after it was first installed.

I saw the plumber run the tap water after he replaced my water meter. How much water consumption will that add to my account?

None. When your new water meter is installed, the contractor will record a starting reading. When the contractor records this reading, they will round the actual reading up to the next whole kilolitre (kL). This allows the contractor to flush the house water without affecting your consumption charges. You may even receive several hundreds of litres of water at no charge.

How will I know that the water meter reading is correct after the water meter has been changed?

You will receive a card to let you know when we will replace your meter. You can take a reading before the meter gets replaced. When your new meter is installed, you will receive another card in your letterbox with the reading of the old meter.

If you don't get a chance to read the water meter before we replace it, you can compare the reading on the card with the reading on your most recent rates notice.
