History

There is no agreement on the origin of the name Bahrs Scrub. It is quite possible that the area got its name from German settler Carl Wilhelm Bahr, born in 1840, or his son Wilhelm, born in 1860. The name may originate from Jimmy-bark Scrub, as reported by a correspondent for The Queenslander newspaper in 1866, who documented his journey through the Albert and Logan districts. The area is called Barr’s Scrub in a letter to the editor of a local paper dated 21 February 1874. The hill between Bethania and Holmview has always been locally known as Bark Hill, so perhaps the name evolved from this.

Windaroo Creek rises in Bahrs Scrub and flows eastwards into the Albert River. In 1993, approval was given for the construction of a state high school to called Bahrs Scrub State High School. When it opened, it became known as Windaroo Valley High School, with the name taken from the housing estate being marketed at the time. Formerly in Albert Shire, then Gold Coast, Bahrs Scrub was made part of Logan City in 2008.
