Beenleigh smart parking

The project is part of a three-year trial and will deliver on one of the key outcomes from the Beenleigh Summit to help with parking in the Beenleigh centre.

The project includes installation of small circular sensors and bay identification plaques to 373 carpark bays in streets surrounding Beenleigh Town Square. A smartphone app will direct users to available carpark bays.

Installation will occur in two stages:

  • Stage one – George Street, Crete Street, Kent Street, James Street, Victoria Street.
  • Stage two – Main Street, City Road, John Street, York Street.

Key outcomes from the smart parking project

  • Help with wayfinding to available car parking spaces.
  • Reduced time spent looking for a carpark.
  • Providing accurate carpark occupancy data for Council to use to align time limits with demand.
  • To help Council find areas where more car parking is needed, to direct future expenditure.

Installation process

  • Sensors are installed by drilling and placing a small round sensor disc into the asphalt so that it is flush with the existing pavement surface.
  • Each sensor will only take five minutes to install and is done using a small van/vehicle which moves slowly between each bay.
  • Traffic management will be in place to help drivers and pedestrians.
  • Only one side of the street will be affected on any particular day, making sure customers can still access nearby car parking.
  • Affected carparks will be opened as installation is completed.

Installation timeframes

  • Stage one installation will take place from Tuesday 22 February to Friday 25 February 2021
  • Stage two installation is scheduled for August 2021 after completion of the streetscape upgrade works.
  • Works will be undertaken early (5:30am to 11:00am) to minimise disruption to existing businesses.
