How to start or manage a community garden

We can support you through your journey of developing a new community garden in the City of Logan. Before starting a community garden, we encourage you to consider the following questions:

  • Do I have time to coordinate and attend garden group meetings on the weekends and / or weekdays?
  • Do I want to manage a group of like-minded people and grow a place for community?

If you have the passion but don’t have the time to manage a garden, we encourage you to connect with other existing gardens in your local area. View the up-to-date list of community gardens.

Where can a community garden be set up?

Community gardens can be on private property or Council owned or controlled land. If you are unsure who owns the land at the site you would like to use, please call us on 07 3412 3412.

Starting a community garden on Council owned land

We lease our community gardens to a range of organisations. Eligible organisations must:

  • have $20 million public liability insurance
  • be an incorporated organisation or have an auspice agreement with an incorporated organisation.

If you have a particular Council park or recreation area in mind, you can put an application to start a community garden on Council owned land. If you are unsure of spaces available, we can assist you by providing some suitable options for a community garden in your local area.

To apply for a new community garden on Council land, you will need to provide the following documentation:

  • Certificate of Incorporation
  • Public liability insurance of 20 million
  • Basic concept plan of the proposed community garden
  • Garden management plan
  • Community garden development budget
  • Community garden risk management plan

Please fill out the online application form Establish a new community garden on Council owned land.

For more information about how to submit an application and templates of the documentation needed please see Community garden toolkit and templates

Submitting an Expression of Interest for an existing community garden on Council owned land

There are opportunities to take over existing community gardens if the lease is not renewed. These gardens are already established in the community and will require less materials and resources to get started.

You can find current opportunities by visiting Expression of Interest for existing community gardens.

Starting a community garden on private land

Logan City Council is not responsible for managing private land. We encourage community garden groups to use our Community garden toolkit (PDF 8 MB).

Established community gardens on private land can apply to have their community garden information and details displayed on our website by submitting an Register an existing community garden on private land in Logan.
