Breeding and approvals

Deciding to breed is a big decision. You must meet strict criteria under our Local Laws and also State Legislation.

Dogs

You cannot breed a dog in Queensland unless you register as a dog breeder on the Queensland Dog Breeder Register. The Queensland Government introduced these laws to promote the responsible breeding of dogs. These laws apply to any dog born on or after 26 May 2017.

Dog breeding standards and guidelines were also introduced on 1 October 2018. These were developed with Dogs Queensland and RSPCA Queensland, to ensure animal welfare.

The standards and guidelines apply to all dog breeders. A dog breeder is anyone that owns a dog that has a litter, including an unplanned or accidental litter. If you breed dogs in Queensland, you must comply with these standards.

For more information, please read the breeding Queensland Governments dog breeding standards and guidelines. They detail essential care requirements you will need to provide for your dog and its litter.

You must also have a unique breeder identification number (BIN), known as a supply number. This number can trace any puppies back to you as the breeder. You must display your BIN or supply number when advertising, selling or giving away a dog. To apply for a supply number, please visit Queensland Government dog breeders’ register. Your supply number will only be current for 12 months.

If you live in Logan and wish to breed your dog, you must also become a member of Dogs Queensland. Your membership must remain current. Membership must be renewed every 12 months. For more information on how to become a member, please visit Dogs Queensland.

There are limits on the number of animals you can keep on your property. If you breed, the total number of dogs and puppies on your property must not exceed the allowable number. For more information on the number of allowable animals you can keep, see Your Pets and the Law.

You can report any concerns about puppy breeding to Queensland dog breeders’ register.
