Swooping birds

There are many species of birds that are known for their swooping behaviour.

Magpies, Butcherbirds, Plovers and Miners are the most well-known of these birds.

Swooping is a normal protective behaviour of these birds during their breeding season and can last up to 6 weeks. This behaviour is a way to scare off intruders (humans, animals and sometimes objects). Once the baby chicks have fledged the behaviour usually stops.

To protect yourself against swooping birds;

  • Avoid the area during breeding season.
  • Move quickly through the area – don’t run.
  • Wear a hat or carry an umbrella.
  • Bike riders dismount and walk.
