Wandering Dogs

Dogs wander for many reasons. Thunderstorms, fireworks or loud noises, poorly constructed enclosures or open gates can cause dogs to wander.

Dogs must be under effective control at all times whether being kept at home or out at a public place.

You are responsible for making sure your dog is kept in such a way that it doesn’t wander from your property and become a nuisance or cause an injury to a person or animal.

If your animal wanders outside of its enclosure, it’s in danger of getting lost, injured, killed, or could cause an accident.

If you see a wandering animal, please report it to our Animal Management Team who will patrol the area and collect the animal. Our team will keep them safe and help reunite it with its family.

Wandering cats

Wandering cats are a major concern for our city. All cats must be contained to their property at all times. This can be achieved by keeping your cat/s permanently indoors, constructing a cat enclosure or modifying your fencing to keep your cat from wandering.

Wandering cats are in danger of getting lost, injured, or even killed on our busy roads.

Keeping your cat contained will prevent them from creating a nuisance for others. Nuisances can be from fighting, unwanted kittens, property damage, defecating in other people’s gardens, causing dogs to bark and injury or death to wildlife.

Cat Traps

If you are experiencing issues with wandering cats, you can borrow a humane cat trap from us.

Traps can be hired for a period of 1 week (subject to availability). Humane cat traps are an effective way to trap troublesome cats. Council’s cat traps are safe for animals and are pre-assembled and ready for immediate use.

There are strict welfare conditions that must be followed. Our staff will talk you through your obligations at the time you borrow a trap. If you are unable to collect or return the trap to the Animal Management Centre, alternative arrangements must be made prior to borrowing the trap.
