Water saving tips for schools

Schools use a lot of water every day. Your school may be able to use this precious water more efficiently. Making an effort to save water can be easy.

Facts

  • Almost half the water used at school is from toilets.
  • Just one dripping tap can waste 16,000 litres of quality drinking water every year.
  • Dual-flush toilets can save up to 8 litres of water per flush.
  • Taps fitted with aerators can reduce the amount of water used by 50%.

Tips to help you save water

  • Use the half-flush button on toilets.
  • Tell teachers or your principal about running toilets and dripping taps or bubblers.
  • Clean paint brushes in a container with water, not under a tap.
  • Talk to a teacher about making signs to remind people to save water. Put them up near bubblers and taps.
  • Organise a water-saving committee to help everyone in the school learn about ways to save water.
  • Organise events to raise money for water-saving devices at school.
  • Teachers can use the lesson plans from our School Water Education Resources.
