Legislative principles
“These legislated principles, together with Council’s corporate values form the basis of our code and guide our thinking, actions and decision-making.”
The Public Sector Ethics Act 1994 describes 4 ethics principles that guide our behaviour and form the basis for our code. These are:
- Integrity and impartiality.
- Promoting the public good.
- Commitment to the system of government.
- Accountability and transparency.
The Local Government Act 2009 also requires that a council’s actions are consistent with the following principles:
- transparent and effective processes and decision-making in the public interest
- sustainable development and management of assets and infrastructure and delivery of effective services
- democratic representation, social inclusion and meaningful community engagement
- good governance of, and by, local government
- ethical and legal behaviour of councillors, local government employees and councillor advisors.
