Description:

Narrator:

If you own a property, there are certain standards that have to be met to ensure the safety of our community and our roads.

Description:

Zooms in to a red house with a driveway right outside the garage doors. Driveway is then highlighted in turquoise colour. A white box drops from the sky onto the drive way. Inside the white box is text that reads “ your responsibility” in capital letters.

Narrator:

The construction and maintenance of your driveway is your responsibility. The area you are responsible for includes the driveway from the road to the fence line.

Description:

Yellow highlights on the bottom half of the driveway with a measurement of 5 metres.

Narrator:

The maximum width of a driveway is 5 metres.

Description:

A picture of trade workers mixing concrete slides in from the right, followed by a picture a picture of workers laying asphalt and then a picture of bricks next to pavers.

Narrator:

It can be constructed from concrete, asphalt or pavers and it must remain level and slip resistant.

Description:

An animated shot of what is underneath a footpath and showing how you should replace the footpath that crosses your driveway to match the existing footpath’s level.

Narrator:

If a footpath crosses your driveway, you will need to remove and replace the part of the footpath that is connected to the driveway and match the existing footpath level. Council footpaths are not designed for vehicular traffic.

Description:

A driveway appears on a steep hill that leads from the road down to the red house seen previously. A red line and “at least 250 millimetres” appears at the highest point of the driveway. A red arrow pointing down at the road appears with the words “lowest point of the kerb”. 2 dotted diagonal lines appear, meeting to form a point just above the previously highlighted highest point of the driveway. One line leads to the kerb and shows a measurement line of 3.5 metres and the other line leads down to the house, representing the shape the driveway should be to prevent water spilling into the property. The dotted lines disappear, and it begins to rain. Water begins to pool from the road at and at the top of the driveway and pooling down towards the house. The rain stops and the water on the driveway disappears.

Narrator:

When planning a driveway that would sit on a slope, ensure the highest point of the driveway is at least 250 millimetres above the lowest point of the curb. To achieve a high point of at least 250 millimetres, the driveway would require a gradual and varying slope for at least 3.5 metres from the curb to match standard foot paths grade and to limit water spilling off the road and into your property.

Description:

The animation cuts to a close up of the join from the kerb to the driveway. Different types of joining objects fly across the screen to cover the gap one by one. A grey brick like material, a black metal grate, 2 long blocks of wood. Water starts to appear from the left side of the screen and pools towards the driveway before fading away.

Narrator:

Inserting materials into the gutters of the driveway is generally not permitted because it blocks waterflow during heavy rain.

Description:

A cyclist rides a bicycle past the gutters and the bike fumbles slightly riding over the two wooden blocks, after the cyclist rides out of frame cracks appear on the road.

Narrator:

It’s a hazard to road users including cyclists and can damage the road. You may seek approval from council in exceptional circumstances.

Description:

A birds eye view of a red house with no driveway, but a path lining the full horizontal view in front of the house, a path stems from this and leads to the front door. On the right side of the house part of the path disappears and black dotted lines appear to identify a space for a new driveway. The black dotted lines disappear as the space it highlighted now becomes filled with the same colour of the footpath. The home now has a driveway.

Narrator:

Some new driveways and driveway modifications require application to be submitted to council.

Description:

Application forms fly into the screen from the right side of the screen.

Narrator:

Please check our website to see if you need to submit an application.

Description:

The screen goes white and text appears reading “Council provides standard driveway drawings free of charge.”

Narrator:
