Enclosure requirements

Preventing your poultry from escaping is an important part of being a responsible pet owner. Enclosures should be in a clean and tidy condition at all times.

Enclosures must:

  • be at least 90 centimetres from the boundary of the property
  • be at least 10 metres from a neighbouring dwelling (not including roosters and peafowl)
  • be at least 30 metres from a neighbouring dwelling (for roosters and peafowl)
  • have a minimum area of 1 square metre per bird

General requirements

As a responsible pet owner, you must make sure keeping the poultry does not cause:

  • a build-up of animal faeces
  • breeding or harbouring of flies or vermin
  • damage to property
  • harm to human health or safety
  • nuisance
  • disruption to a neighbour’s enjoyment
