Planned burns

Overview

Our Planned Burn Program helps reduce bushfire risk in parks and reserves. By burning selected parts of parks, we can help to control the spread of bushfires.

Why we conduct planned burns

  • Planned burns reduce the fuel hazard in bushfire-prone areas by slowly burning off undergrowth in controlled conditions that allow animals to escape.
  • Planned burns improve forest health by allowing and promoting natural regeneration of local plants.
  • Planned burns maintain bushland safety. They are only conducted under a Permit to Light, issued by Queensland Fire Department, and they are only conducted in suitable weather conditions.

How we manage planned burns

  • We conduct planned burns when weather conditions are within the conditions detailed on the Permit to Light and to align with QFD Operation Sesbania.
  • We plan burns by considering the overall bushfire risk, safety for staff and the impact on plants and animals.
  • We use online weather forecasts to determine the most suitable day for the burn.
  • The staff that develop and conduct the planned burns are trained in conservation, land management, fire management and bushfire suppression.

How we will let you know about planned burns

  • You can download the Logan Early Warning Network app to receive updates and notifications of proposed timing of planned burns in your area. Or you can register online for alerts.
  • We send notification letters to people living in adjoining properties before any planned burn.
  • We use social media and our website to notify the community about planned burns.
  • If we postponed a burn due to poor weather conditions, we will reschedule it for the next suitable day.

If a planned burn is postponed until the next year's burn season, a new notification letter will be sent before the next years planned burn season commences.

How you can prepare for a planned burn

When you know a planned burn is happening nearby:

  • close your doors and windows
  • take washing off the line
  • limit going outside
  • drive to the conditions.

For more information about planned burns, please download the Planned burns brochure(PDF, 9MB) or visit the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services website.

Bushfires can spread fast. There are steps you can take to reduce the risks and effects of bushfires and house fires.
