Standpipes and approved potable water filling stations

1. How to apply

Download and fill in the Approval for supply of potable water through a metered standpipe application(PDF, 713KB).

2. Bond

You will need to pay a bond of $2,400.00 before you can collect your metered standpipe. After we process your application, we will send you a notice of fees so you can pay the bond. Subject to credit checks and approvals, you may need to pay extra fees or bond before you can collect your metered standpipe.

3. Bulk water metered standpipe users

Domestic water carriers

Potable water carriers delivering water to residential properties must:

  • hold an Australian Business Number (ABN)
  • act within the terms and conditions of the approval
  • hold a current food business licence, health inspection certificate and air-gap backflow certificate for their vessel.

Water carriers in general

Potable water carriers for other uses apart from domestic use must:

  • hold an Australian Business Number (ABN)
  • act within the terms and conditions of the approval
  • hold a current air-gap backflow certificate for their vessel
  • have a current certificate for the double-check valve being used
  • test all backflow devices and double-check valves every 12 months and provide us with a certificate of currency.

4. Returning a standpipe

To arrange a time to return a metered standpipe please call us on 07 3412 3412.

5. Lost, damaged or stolen standpipes

  • If a metered standpipe is damaged, please call us on 07 3412 3412.
  • If a standpipe is lost or stolen, you must report it to the police. After you report it to the police, please send an email with the crime report number to council@logan.qld.gov.au.

6. Readings and issuing of account

Metered standpipe users need to supply monthly meter readings. Each month we will send customers an invoice for the water dispensed. You can record your monthly reading in the metered standpipe log book(PDF, 73KB).

7. Water usage charge

Water usage is charged at $6.10 per kilolitre (1,000 litres) of water supplied. This charge is made up of two parts:

  • the State Government bulk water charge is $3.44 per kilolitre. This is set and charged by the State Government for the supply of water to Logan City.
  • the Council water usage charge $2.66 per kilolitre, set by us, is what we charge for water supply from metered hydrant standpipes.

8. Approved potable water fill points

There are 29 hydrant fill points in Logan that you can access with a metered standpipe.

9. How to use an authorised hydrant fill point

  1. The hydrant has two lugs facing opposite directions.
  2. Lift the lid and clean any dirt from around the lugs and mushroom hydrant outlet.
  3. The hydrant outlet is now ready.
  4. Before attaching the standpipe to the hydrant, wind the spindle up (anti-clockwise) as far as you can. Check that the base nut sealing washer is fitted, and screw the base nut lugs right down (clockwise). You are now ready to attach the standpipe to the hydrant.
  5. Place the standpipe base nut and lugs down onto the hydrant. Engage the standpipe lugs under the hydrant lugs, then, holding the standpipe by both handles, turn the standpipe (clockwise) until firmly fastened. Do not over tighten. Do not use any extension pipes on the standpipe handles. Do not use other tools to attach or remove the standpipe.
  6. If required, attach equipment to the standpipe before turning it on.
  7. Turn the spindle clockwise until water starts to flow. Do not wind the spindle all the way down as this could result in the standpipe not shutting down properly. About 30mm down provides maximum flow.
  8. When finished, turn the spindle (anti-clockwise) until the water flow stops. If any devices are attached to the standpipe outlet, release the pressure first before removing the standpipe.
  9. Turn the entire standpipe (anti-clockwise) until the lugs become loose and the standpipe can be lifted out.
  10. Make sure to put the hydrant lid back on before you leave.
