Ruby’s story

Trainee Animal Services Attendant
Certificate III Animal Services (Animal Companion) 2024
When I began my traineeship in animal management, I had no industry experience, just a deep desire to learn and make a difference. The path ahead was unfamiliar, but I embraced every challenge with determination and heart.
Early on, I faced steep learning curves, financial pressures, and mental health struggles. Yet, I never let those obstacles define me. I showed up every day, ready to give my best, driven by a passion to grow and contribute meaningfully. I accepted every task thrown my way, no matter how daunting, and treated each one as an opportunity to prove to myself what I was capable of.
What made the journey truly transformative was the unwavering support I received. The trainee and apprentice team, along with my direct supervisors, stood by me through every high and low. Their encouragement, guidance, and belief in my potential gave me the strength to keep pushing forward.
Through hard work and resilience, I was honoured to be nominated for the Queensland State Trainee of the Year Award and proud to be named a regional finalist. That recognition wasn’t just a personal achievement, it was a testament to the power of perseverance, support, and self-belief.
My traineeship taught me that growth doesn’t come from comfort, it comes from courage. Say yes to everything possible, even if you’re scared or unsure you have the ability for the task at hand. You will surprise yourself. And while the road wasn’t always easy, it was absolutely worth it.
