5. Jordan Family Cemetery

Address: Abelia Drive, Waterford West

History

Henry Jordan purchased the former Pimlico township - in July 1869 and commenced construction of a sugar mill. His property became known as Tygum Plantation. Jordan had been the emigration agent for Queensland in Britain and was responsible for the many Lancashire cotton workers coming to Queensland and the Logan. From 1868-71 he was the East Moreton representative in the Queensland Legislative Assembly. He was then involved in journalism and sugar growing. The first crushing at his Tygum sugar mill occurred in 1870.

The Jordan family was plagued with person tragedy during their time at Tygum, with the death of baby Hamilton aged 4 days in October 1872. Twins Nathaniel and Winifred were born in February 1874, with Nathaniel living only 2½ months and Winifred living fourteen months. Another baby boy, Turner Shaw, was born a few days after Winifred’s death, and he only survived eleven months. All of these children were buried on the property in an area now designated as a cemetery. By that time Jordan had subdivided the property and sold Tygum House to William Arthy.

William Arthy was a music teacher for the Education Department. His son James was a surveyor, who worked in north Queensland. James returned home suffering from consumption and died at Tygum on 10 October 1886. William died on 22 July 1888. Both men are buried in this cemetery. It is possible that there are other burials on the site, of people who worked on Jordan’s plantation.

This cemetery site was surveyed at the time of the subdivision of the estate in 1878 and was marked by a large fig tree that died and was removed by the Logan City Council Parks Department in 2004.

7. Logan Reserve Lutheran Cemetery

Address: Corner of Logan Reserve Road and School Road, Logan Reserve
Additional information: Open for all Christian burials, phone Bethania Lutheran Church on 07 3200 5357.

History

Logan Reserve is the oldest settled area on the Logan River and was originally taken up by Irish immigrants in the 1860s. Gradually, German migrants moved into the area and they travelled to Bethania to church. Children attended the Logan Reserve School that was also on this site at that time. A request was made to the department of Public Instruction in 1896 to allow a German School to be run in the building on Saturdays and to use the school for church on Sundays. It would seem that the request for the Saturday School was denied, as the teacher from the parish school at Bethania was sent to Logan Reserve School once a week. The following year the German community built a church known as the Bethel Church. The cemetery evolved alongside the church. The earliest marked burial on the site is that of Adolf Wendt in 1903, but it is likely that there are earlier unmarked graves.

The tornado of February 1936 destroyed the church, but locals soon rebuilt it and it remained on the site until 1972, when it was demolished. The school remained on Portion 46 adjacent to the cemetery, until 1914 when it was moved to its current site on the opposite corner. This cemetery is still used by the Lutheran community and it is managed by the Bethania Church.

8. Logan Reserve Irish Catholic Cemetery

Address: 296A Logan Reserve Road, Logan Reserve

History

Irish immigrants settled in the areas of Waterford West and Logan Reserve. The first Catholic Church was located in Logan Reserve on the property of John Gavan. This bark structure was built in 1865 and also doubled as a school. It was relocated during the early 1870's and then moved again to a site in Waterford West near the Morning Star Hotel on the corner of Loganlea Road around 1877. The Leo Family who owned the hotel at that time donated the land to the Church. A cemetery evolved beside the Waterford church and remained on site until 1993. All marked graves where reinterred at the Gleneagle Cemetery on Mount Lindesay Highway.

Burials

The following is a list of Irish Catholic people thought to be buried in the Logan Reserve area. It includes lone graves, private burials, and possible burials at any of the church locations due to the limited details and records available. 13. Waterford West Catholic Cemetery

This cemetery is no longer in existence - some graves have been relocated to Gleneagle.

History

Between 1870 and approximately 1876 the Catholic school/church was located on Portion 40 at 254 Logan Reserve Road. It is possible there are burials at this site, but the land was never formally transferred to the church.

From 1876, or possibly earlier the chapel was located on Portion 20 near Leo’s Morning Star Hotel. (954-956 Kingston Beenleigh Road).

The land for the church was formally donated by the Leo Family in 1892. The rebuilt chapel was dedicated by Archbishop Dunne on 10 December 1892. The Leo family sold up and left the district in 1899. There are no cemetery records, so educated guesses need to be made to purchase the death certificates to prove burials on this site. Richard and Catherine Leo lost their child Richard Junior aged 7 days in 1874 and he is likely buried on this site. His sister Mary died in 1880 aged 2 Years 10 months and is definitely buried here. Family evidence suggests that there are graves belonging to Richard Leo’s nephews, from the O’Donnell family who lived on the eastern bank of the river at Waterford.

When the property was sold by the Catholic Church in 1983 those graves with headstones were exhumed and re-interred at Gleneagle. They included baby Margaret Egan, who died on 26 November 1893, Alice Winter, presumably the wife of the local blacksmith, who died on 24 March 1932. The other illegible headstone appears to be Patrick and Eleanor Leo, most likely the parents of Richard.

Burials

The following lists burials at the former Waterford West Catholic Cemetery. Bold items are confirmed by death certificate or by headstone relocated to Gleneagle.
