School parking

Parking rules are important near schools because they help keep children safe. As our city grows, traffic and parking around schools can become very busy during pick‑up and drop‑off times, which can be stressful. Please stay patient, alert and follow all parking signs and rules. When possible, consider walking or using public transport.

Helpful tips for pick-up and drop-off zones:

  • Don’t exceed 2 mins in pick-up and drop off zones.
  • Talk to your child ahead of time to plan pick-up and drop off.
  • Please stay with your vehicle – no parking.
  • You may help your child in and out of the vehicle.
  • Keep your indicator on.
  • Keep school bags inside the vehicle instead of the boot to save time.
  • If your child is not there, drive out and come back.
  • Be patient and alert - look out for children, pedestrians and vehicles.
  • Drive to the front of the line before letting your child out of the vehicle.
  • Once your child is safely in or out of the vehicle, depart promptly.

Road rules apply to everyone, including around school areas, entrances, bus stops, and pick‑up and drop‑off zones.

We monitor parking around schools and issues fines for offences. We also use automated number plate recognition technology to detect vehicles that are parked illegally.

For more information about road rules that apply in school parking zones, please visit Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Council doesn’t make the rules. We enforce and uphold the Queensland Road Rules under the Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act and Regulation. For more information, please visit Transport Operations (Road Use Management Road Rules) Regulation 2009.
