Leo the Love-Seeker
Rescued from Mundoolun in August 2025.
Last koala breeding season, young bachelor Leo was on the move in search of love! It was his first time, navigating the ‘burbs without his mum.
Unfortunately, Leo experienced a little misadventure, passing through several yards that happened to have dogs. His mum had warned him about them, so he knew he had to get to safety—and fast! Like many, Leo’s problem-solving skills aren’t the best in high-stress situations, so he decided to stay still on a fence post.
Leo knows that many dogs love a good sniff and a run, but he needs a little space to stay safe. Hanging out on fences like the one in the picture isn’t ideal for him!
Fortunately, the homeowners spotted Leo, brought their four-legged security guards inside, and warned their neighbours not to bring their dogs down for a look. They also called local Wildlife carer and rescuer Mel Dunne, which meant Leo was soon released into nearby bushland—back to his mission of finding love!
Leo is highly koala-ified to share advice, so here are his top tips for pet owners:
- Keep dogs on lead near bushland
- Train recall and “leave it” commands with the free Leave It app
- Keep your dog inside with the family at night
- Move your dog out of sight if you see a koala in your yard
- Call your local wildlife rescue if you see a koala in trouble
Together, Logan can be made safe for wildlife and wagging tails!
If you spot a koala, check if they are sick or injured. Here is what to look out for:
- Red, inflamed or crusty eyes
- Very dirty, wet or brown bottom
- Signs of injury such as cuts, blood or fur loss
- Very skinny
- Not using all four limbs when climbing or walking
- Sitting at the base of a tree or in the same tree for several days.
If you have spotted a sick or injured koala, call for help immediately.
