Waste information in your language

Why we’re creating multilingual waste resources

The City of Logan is proudly one of Australia’s most culturally diverse communities. With more than 327,000 residents representing over 217 cultures, our city is enriched by the many languages, traditions, and experiences our community brings.

To support all residents in managing waste responsibly, we’ve expanded our waste education program with a new series of multilingual videos and flyers. These resources are designed to help everyone understand how to use their household bins correctly and recycle right – no matter which language they speak.

According to the 2021 Census, 18 percent of people in Logan speak a language other than English at home, and more than 10,000 residents reported difficulty speaking English.

To ensure everyone has access to clear and inclusive information, we are developing waste education videos that are:

  • multilingual
  • easy to understand
  • culturally appropriate
  • accessible for people with low English proficiency.

These videos support residents who may be language-dependent and help ensure everyone feels confident sorting waste correctly.

Videos in different Languages

We have created a series of simple, practical waste education videos that explain:

  • how to use your yellow‑lid recycling bin
  • how to use your red‑lid general waste bin
  • how to use your green‑lid garden waste bin
  • what can and cannot go in each bin
  • helpful tips for sorting waste properly
  • safe disposal methods for hazardous items including waste facilities
  • composting at home.

These videos are designed to help keep our community safe, reduce contamination in recycling, and support better environmental outcomes for everyone.

So far, videos are available in:

  • English
  • Spanish
  • Mandarin
  • Hindi
  • Samoan
  • Tagalog

More languages will be added as the project continues. Our goal is to make waste information accessible, inclusive, and helpful for all residents.
