Logan event to reel in aquatic pests

Logan City Council and fish stocking groups have invited enthusiastic anglers to help improve the health of local waterways at the annual Logan Pest Fishing Cup this month.

City of Logan Mayor Jon Raven said invasive fish such as carp and tilapia would be targeted in Scrubby Creek near JJ Smith Park at Marsden on November 23.

“Dust off the rods and bring along your family and friends for a fun day of fishing,” Mayor Raven said.

““Pest fish harm our rivers, creeks and native fish.

“When you cast a line to catch these pests we’ll be there to measure and weigh everything for your bragging rights at the end of the day.”

After fishing and presentations have been completed, Council and the Logan & Albert Fish Management Association will release 1000 Australian bass fingerlings into Scrubby Creek.

Association spokesperson Lloyd Willmann said the fingerlings would boost the recreational fishing opportunities in Logan.

“Our members are working hard all year round to restore the balance of local waterways and rid them of introduced species,” Mr Willmann said.

“We do annual stockings of the Logan and Albert River system and Wyaralong Dam to improve the health of local waterways and give anglers better access to native fish species.”

The last Logan Pest Fishing Cup in January removed 90 kilograms of pest fish.

The event will be held on Sunday, November 23 from 8:00am to 2:00pm at JJ Smith Park (more location details provided at time of registration).

The event is being co-hosted by Logan City Council and 2 Bent Rods.

Tickets are $5 per person, $15 for four people and $20 for five and can be booked online through Humanitix.

Participants can bring their own equipment or a limited number of fishing rods will be available for hire for a gold coin donation.
