Construction of the rail trail will be in two stages.
Slashing works are starting this month in the corridor of Stage 1. This is to prepare the corridor for other early works that will take place over coming months.
We expect Stage 1 main works to start in late 2026 to early 2027.
Overview
Logan City Council has finished the design of the Bethania to Logan Village Rail Trail, with support from the Queensland Government's Rail Trail Local Government Grants Program.
The Rail Trail Local Government Grants Program was introduced to support the delivery of recreational walking, bike riding and horse trails on disused State-owned rail corridors.
We're transforming 11.5 kilometres of historical rail corridor into a destination for Logan residents and visitors to enjoy.
Stage 1 of the Rail Trail project starts in the north from Easterly Street, Waterford, and connects to Logan Village in the south, and the start of the Yarrabilba to Logan Village Rail Trail. This section will be 8.5 kilometres long.
Stage 2 runs between the Bethania Train Station and Easterly Street, Waterford. We will deliver it in the future when funding becomes available. We remain committed to completing the full rail trail. This section will be 3 kilometres long.
The trail will provide a much-needed safe off-road connection from Bethania to the Yarrabilba Rail Trail, better connecting the City of Logan. By improving opportunities to cycle, walk and run, we are building a healthier and greener city.
Timeline
After we completed preliminary design of the rail trail in June 2022, we invited the community to share their thoughts and ideas between August to October that year. Further engagement sessions in 2023 allowed community to provide feedback on the ongoing design.
Rising construction costs in 2024 led Council to pause the project while we considered other funding opportunities.
Design is now complete.
To keep the project moving, construction will be in 2 stages. We expect Stage 1 to start in late 2026 to early 2027. Stage 2 will start when funding becomes available.
We will be back in touch with the community when a construction start date is known.

The design includes:
- an 11.5 kilometre concrete, gravel and asphalt rail trail from Bethania train station to Logan Village
- Stage 1 is 8.5 kilometres
- Stage 2 is 3 kilometres
- bike service and repair stations at Bethania and Logan Village
- yarning circle, sheltered seating and water bubblers with taps and dog drinking bowls along the trail
- parking at the Dairy Creek trail head, which includes parking facilities for horse floats, sheltered seating, bins, a dog waste bin, horse step ups and a drinking fountain (subject to approvals)
- security cameras in some sections.

Community consultation
A Have Your Say survey ran from August to October 2022. It asked the community to share their thoughts and ideas for the project. The information gathered helped further develop the draft design.
In July 2023, we held information sessions held in Logan Village, Waterford and Bethania and invited the community to view and provide comments on the latest draft design.
The feedback on the draft design supported additional amendments, and we incorporated them into the final design where budget and environmental constraints allowed.

What is the Bethania to Logan Village Rail Trail project?
It’s a Logan City Council and Queensland Government initiative that will transform 11.5 kilometres of historical, formerly utilised rail corridor into a destination for Logan residents and visitors to enjoy.

This section will join with the existing Yarrabilba to Logan Village Rail Trail, creating a 14.5 kilometre route, from Bethania to Yarrabilba.
By extending and improving our bike riding and walking facilities, we are building a healthier and greener city.

A feasibility study was undertaken in 2021, to examine the project’s benefits, costs and opportunities.

Has the rail trail corridor been selected? Does it need to connect to Bethania Station?
The Bethania to Logan Village Rail Trail has now been endorsed by Council and will follow the route of the historically used rail corridor from Bethania Station to Logan Village.
Options for alternative routes / starting points were considered as part of the feasibility study undertaken in 2021.
The feasibility study found the following project benefits will be realised by connecting Bethania Station to Logan Village:
- The trail will be easily accessible for recreational users who can travel by train and will help to attract visitor numbers.
- The length of the trail (Bethania to Yarrabilba) will be maximised which is an important element in attracting users, especially bike riders.
- The trail can perform a meaningful commuter function connecting the suburbs and villages en-route to Bethania Station and the rail network beyond.
The feasibility study recommended the rail trail be built within the already publicly owned rail corridor from Bethania Station to Logan Village and the funding has been agreed on this basis.
Who owns the land where the rail trail will be constructed?
The State of Queensland owns the land that will be used for the Rail Trail. This parcel of land has been leased to Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR).
DTMR have committed to work with Council to progress a rail trail.
What will the surface of the rail trail be made from?
Stage 1 will link Logan Village in the south with the High Road, Easterly Street and Old Logan Village Road Upgrade in the north, connecting the Rail Trail with the regional active transport network and Bethania station.
From Easterly Street to Dairy Creek Road the path is asphalt concrete and boardwalk creating an accessible route suitable for wheelchairs and prams.
From Dairy Creek Road to Quinzeh Creek Road the path will be a compacted crushed gravel, suitable for walking, running, wheeling and riding.
From Quinzeh Creek Road to the connection with the start of the Logan Village to Yarrabilba trail, the surface will be asphalt and concrete.
How did Council engage with the Logan community?
To help inform the design phase of this project, Council invited the community to participate in a Have Your Say survey.
The survey was open from 31 August 2022 to 12 October 2022.
How much is Council contributing to the cost?
Logan City Council has committed $7.8 million towards the $11.29 million budget for Stage 1 of the Bethania to Logan Village Rail Trail project.
The Queensland Government has confirmed $3.5 million.
Latest project estimates indicate that the cost of the project has increased from the original funding agreement signed between Logan City Council and the Queensland Government in August 2022.
The State Government has agreed to the staged delivery of the project.
