Project: Habitat on Juers
Design Architect: REFRESH Studio for Architecture

Judges’ citation: Projects of this kind are critically important in demonstrating emerging trends in the design of sustainable social, affordable and market-driven housing typologies that reinforce local identity and a sense of place. Habitat on Juers unpacks a new dual occupancy townhouse model that is worthy of further investigation. The Jury encourages Logan City Council and the Queensland Government to work together to identify larger precinct revitalisation and redevelopment opportunities that will improve the liveability and prosperity of the community and contribute to solving the city’s issues of housing, homelessness, land supply and affordability.

Project: Pebble Creek Parklands
Landscape Architect: SLR Consulting
Developer: Orchard Property Group

Judges’ citationThe Pebble Creek Parklands exemplify a restrained approach to parkland design wherein the thoughtful preservation and featuring of the existing forest landscape has been complimented with a series of refined landscape places that are sensitive and seamless in general arrangement and finer grain robust detailing. Key to the designers' approach has been not overplaying their hand, and expertly avoiding looking at me individual landscape statement pieces in favour of a carefully composed, beautifully arranged landscape composition that blends organic materials, soft colours, and natural and curated landscape components in a joyful and calming landscape that will mature gracefully as it evolves through time and community use.

Project: Habitat on Juers
Design Architect: REFRESH Studio for Architecture

Judges’ citation: As our neighbours and neighbourhoods grow up and grow old, we must look to new forms of ‘missing middle’ housing that respond to our changing climate and needs. Habitat on Juers is a social housing project founded on social inclusion, accessibility, and energy efficiency, with sixteen gold, silver and platinum level accessible dwellings, an average 8.5 NatHERS star rating, and one of the first examples of Cross Laminated Timber technology in residential construction in Queensland.

This is a project that demonstrates that our low-density neighbourhoods can deliver well-designed housing choice that is appealing to a wide range of renters, owner-occupiers and investors in search of a good place to call home.

Project: Area 51 BNE | Alien Night Market
Company: Four Season Indoor Play Centre | Alien Night Market

Judges’ citation: Area 51BNE & Alien Night Market is a great example of an entrepreneur seeing a location and a building, and just going for it. This project takes the well-recognised building shell of a Bunnings warehouse and flips its function from home improvement to fun, friends and food. The internal space is re-created as an indoor games and event venue with oversized inflatables, adventure games and sound. The tired outdoor nursery space has been transformed into a vibrant food market, operating in the evenings. The building design doesn’t take itself too seriously. Street art and neon lighting transform the façade of the ‘big box’ and highlight to visitors you have arrived at a place where you can expect the unexpected. Area 51 BNE is a place for everyone; for the young and the young-at-heart, and is well positioned to make a positive contribution to the weekend and night-time economy of Underwood and beyond.
