Overall Logan Urban Design Awards 2025 Winner

Project: Underwood Social Housing - Department of Housing and Public Works and Archipelago

Judges’ citation: The Underwood Social Housing project at Cristaldi Avenue exemplifies excellence in responsive, inclusive and sustainable urban design. On a highly constrained sloping site, Archipelago have delivered 9 much-needed dwellings that balance community connection and privacy. The design organises homes around a central garden spine, encouraging neighbourly interaction while allowing for personal retreat. With a sensitive suburban scale, robust low-maintenance materials, and productive landscaping, the project once again sets a new benchmark for not just social housing but also the missing middle housing typology in the City of Logan.

Responsive and Resilient Award Winner

Project: Underwood Social Housing - Department of Housing and Public Works and Archipelago

Judges’ citation: Archipelago has transformed a challenging site into a strength through a climate-responsive design tailored for a sub-tropical climate, which embraces the natural slope to shape an urban form that is both sensitive to its suburban context and a fine example of an emerging missing middle housing typology in Logan. By deprioritising the car, the design achieves a human-scale frontage that integrates seamlessly with its surroundings. The durable, low-maintenance structures are further enhanced by lush vegetation and functional screening, promoting sustainable living and long-term resilience.
