How to use a standpipe video transcript

Hi, I'm Sean from Logan Water and today I'll be demonstrating on how to use a stand pipe.
Description
Two different sizes of standpipes are shown. Sean holds up the 65 mm standpipe.
Sean
Our stand pipe comes in two sizes, 25 mm and 65 mm. Before you connect the stand pipe, do a quick pre-use check to make sure it's in good working order.
Description
Mushroom plunger at the bottom of the standpipe is shown. Electronic number dial at the top of the standpipe is also displayed.

Check that the mushroom plunger and base washer are secure and operational and ensure that the dial is readable.

Spindle at the top of the standpipe is wound all the way in anticlockwise direction. Hydrant is wiped clean of dirt.

Lastly, make sure the spindle is wound all the way out in an anticlockwise direction. Now that the stamp pipe is ready to go, check that the hydrant top is clear of dirt and debris.

A threaded collar is wound onto the base of the standpipe and then the standpipe is wound onto the hydrant in a clockwise direction.

With a threaded collar screwed to the base of the stamp pipe, lower the stamp pipe into the hydrant. Attach the stamp pipe and rotate in a clockwise direction until firmly secure.
Description
Swivel head of the standpipe is turned to face preferred direction. Spindle handle at top of the standpipe is turned which allows water to start gushing out of the standpipe.

Once secured, you can adjust the swivel head by turning slowly in a clockwise direction. Operate the spindle handle by slowly turning it in a clockwise direction.

Spindle is wound in counterclockwise direction until water flow stops.

Removing the stand pipe while water is flowing can cause water hammer and may damage the network including possible pipe bursts. That's why flow should always be increased and decreased slowly.

If the hydrant mush jams open and the stand pipe cannot be turned off, do not attempt to remove the stand pipe yourself. Stop what you are doing and report the issue to Logan Water so it can be checked and repaired safely.

Sean turns the spindle until the water flow stops and then removes the standpipe and closes the hydrant lid before walking away.

Once you have finished, slowly decrease the flow. Making sure the water is stopped completely. Then remove the stand pipe and close the hydrant lid.
