Energy efficiency

Saving energy benefits the environment and your budget. Here are some ways to save energy at home:

  • Turn off or unplug appliances and electronics when not in use.
  • When upgrading appliances choose a model with a higher Energy Star Rating.
  • Turn off lights and fans when no one is in the room, and switch to energy-efficient LED lighting.
  • Dry your washing on an indoor or outdoor clothes line rather than using a dryer.

Heating and cooling

In summer:

  • If you need to use the air conditioner, set the temperature higher (25 – 27 degrees). Each degree cooler uses 10% more energy.
  • Close off parts of the house that are not in use or don’t need cooling, like the garage, bathroom and unused bedrooms.
  • Use fans, they use less electricity than an air conditioner and can circulate the cool airflow from air conditioner to help make you feel cooler.
  • During the hottest parts of the day close windows, blinds and curtains to keep the heat out.
  • Catch the breeze. In summer make the most of natural airflow in the cooler parts of the day by opening windows to bring in the breeze and let the hot air out.

In winter:

  • Use your reverse cycle air conditioner for heating instead of a plug-in heater. Air conditioners are much more efficient than plug-in heaters.
  • Close off the parts of the house that don’t need heating, and keep windows, blinds and curtains closed to keep the warm air inside.
  • Use fans to circulate hot air in winter. Using ceiling fans to push the air downwards in winter improves heating efficiency. Locate the winter setting on the fan or remote control.
