Swooping birds
There are many species of birds that are known for their swooping behaviour.
Magpies, Butcherbirds, Plovers and Miners are the most well-known of these birds.
Swooping is a normal protective behaviour of these birds during their breeding season and can last up to 6 weeks. This behaviour is a way to scare off intruders (humans, animals and sometimes objects). Once the baby chicks have fledged the behaviour usually stops.
To protect yourself against swooping birds:
- Avoid the area during breeding season.
- Move quickly through the area – don’t run.
- Wear a hat or carry an umbrella.
- Bike riders dismount and walk.
What Council does
