Tree maintenance and damage

Council manages the City’s urban forest across parks, streets and public spaces. Our approach to tree care focuses on safety, sustainability and long-term health. By working together, we can preserve the beauty, safety and ecological value of our urban forest.

Tree maintenance

We prioritise the care and retention of healthy trees. Our tree maintenance program follows industry standards to help maintain and keep public trees safe.

All tree work is performed by qualified staff or contractors, following Australian Standards. We only undertake pruning or remove trees when necessary and after a thorough assessment by qualified staff or contractors.

We do not support pruning or removal for reasons like improving views, reducing shading, addressing leaf or fruit drop, minor driveway or footpath damage, or concerns related to wildlife activity.

In limited circumstances, removal may be considered where evidence supports the need for further action. We understand that tree matters can be complex and sometimes the outcome of an investigation may not be what you expected. If you disagree with Council’s technical assessment, you’re welcome to obtain independent advice from an AQF Level 5 qualified and experienced arborist and share it with us for review.

If you’d like to discuss the outcome of your investigation, or you’re unsure about the next steps, please contact us.

Tree damage

If a tree or branch from Council managed land falls onto private property and causes damage, we will assess the situation to determine what assistance we can provide. In most cases, property owners are responsible for repairs that are normally covered by private insurance, like fixing roofs, fences or other structures. Council does not accept financial responsibility where private insurance would usually apply.

To report tree damage or request an assessment, please report online or contact us on 07 3412 3412.
