Think before you sink

Keeping fats, oils and food scraps out of your sink will reduce damage to your household pipes, Councils wastewater network and the environment.

Fats, oils and food scraps quickly solidify, sticking to the walls of pipes and clogging it up. This can result in expensive plumbing bills to get them unblocked.

Steps to prevent blockages

There are three basic steps to prevent blockages in plumbing and wastewater pipes:

1. Store it - Fats, oil and grease in a reusable container. When full, dispose at your nearest Waste and Recycling Centre.
2. Scrap it - Place food scraps in the compost or worm farm.
3. Save it - Recycle what you can.

Inappropriate items

Some items that are inappropriately placed down the sink are:

• Coffee grounds - add it to your garden soil
• Medication - return these to your pharmacist for appropriate disposal
• Flour - dispose in your general waste bin
• Pasta and rice - scrap into your compost bin
• Grease and food fats - use a paper towel to remove excess grease and fat before washing. Throw the oily paper towel into the general waste bin.
• Cooking oil, fat and grease - place into a reusable container
• Butter - scrape into a reusable container
• Eggshells - add it to your garden soil
• Produce stickers - dispose in your general waste bin
