Overflow relief gully video transcript

It looks like there’s some rain coming.

There’s a lot you can do this storm season to be prepared, including checking your overflow relief gully.

Some people think it’s just a drain. It’s not just a drain, though. An OG — commonly known as an overflow relief gully — is a small drain outside your house. It allows wastewater to overflow, stopping any internal damage to your bathroom, kitchen, laundry, or even worse, your whole house.

When pressure builds up, the OG grate may pop off, allowing wastewater to escape outside. But this will only work if it’s clear, uncovered, and installed correctly.

Here are a few things you can do to make sure your OG can do its job:

  • Make sure your OG sits well above ground level. This helps prevent stormwater from flowing into it.
  • Check that the top of your OG can pop off easily — that’s how it releases pressure if wastewater backs up.
  • Make sure your OG is free of dirt, silt, or anything else that can block it.
  • Don’t cover your OG with anything — not rocks, pot plants, or mulch.
  • No stormwater pipes or pits should connect into your OG. They’re not designed for rainwater.

If you’re concerned about your OG or you think it has issues, speak to a licensed plumber.

It’s not just a drain — it’s your home’s safety valve. Be prepared this storm season and show your OG some love.
