Parramatta Road stormwater channel rehabilitation project

Latest update
Construction work is expected to start late 2026, pending contractor availability and weather and site conditions.
We will communicate with property owners and businesses before works begin with further details, including timing and what you can expect.
Overview
We are rehabilitating the open stormwater channel east of Kingston Road to Parramatta Road in Underwood, to allow stormwater to drain more easily and help protect people and local properties.
The rehabilitation area is approximately 1,400m² and is surrounded by industrial properties.
The work is focused on the channel itself. We expect minimal disturbances to neighbouring businesses.
The channel was initially lined with a concrete mattress which has broken down over time. This means the unlined earth is progressively eroding, undermining dividing fences and impacting the hardstand and carpark areas of adjacent businesses
Timeline
Design works for these rehabilitation works started in March 2022 and were completed in June 2023.

Features
The rehabilitation works includes:
- removing vegetation
- building a reinforced concrete lining in the channel
- removing and replacing fences, where required for construction access
- improving the drainage structure on the upstream end of the channel
- adding fencing adjacent the Parramatta Road footpath.
Benefits
This rehabilitation work protects the channel from future erosion. It will better direct water, minimising storm water from escaping during severe storm events helping protect people and local properties.
In addition, the pedestrian fencing will increase safety by preventing public access into the channel.
Impacts
- Temporary fencing for property to allow access into the channel
- Changed traffic conditions including reduced speed limits, during works on either end of the channel
- Increased noise and vibration
- Temporary footpath closures.
