Tulong Street Master Drainage Upgrade
Latest Update – June 2026
Early works for the project are scheduled to start on 29 June 2026. They include:
- surveying existing property conditions including drone photography
- underground service locating and identifying
- tree clearing and stump grinding
- setting up site compound and work areas.
The property dilapidation surveys will be completed before the project starts to ensure the existing external condition of properties is fully recorded and photographed to help determine any damage claims. Most surveys will be done from the road reserve, outside property boundaries. If Council’s contractor, BMD, needs to enter a property, they will contact the property occupants first and ask them to sign a permission to enter form before any access takes place.
Project overview
Stormwater drainage systems are a critical part of our city's infrastructure. During severe storms they move large volumes of water away from homes and businesses and help reduce localised effects. With weather patterns changing, we are investing in a major program of stormwater drainage network upgrades to help protect the city into the future.
As part of the program, a comprehensive upgrade of the stormwater drainage network is about to start in the Tulong Street catchment area including parts of Tulong, Barakee, Kyogle, Bushlark and Carinya streets.
The aim is to make the area safer, help protect people and properties during major storms, and reduce the impacts of runoff from the catchment to nearby Browns Plains Road.
To help reduce these impacts, we will:
- install new drainage infrastructure including pipes, manholes and kerb inlets
- resurface parts of the roads including some structural repairs
- reconstruct impacted driveways (where required)
- replace sections of kerb and footpath
- remove vegetation and trim or remove trees (where necessary)
- complete associated works including replacement/relocation of utility services and restoration activities.
Project timing
The early works are expected to take up to 2 weeks, followed immediately by the start of the main works.
The full works program is scheduled to take about 5 to 6 months to complete, construction and weather conditions permitting.
All works will be from Monday to Friday, 7:00am to 6:00pm (excluding public holidays).
BMD will notify affected property owners 7 days in advance of any disruption to their driveway access. Residents should contact BMD onsite staff to discuss arrangements if access is required for health or home help service.
Where lane closures are required or crews are working close to live traffic, traffic controllers will be on duty during working hours. Electronic advisory signs will be installed and updated regularly to advise current activities. For your safety and that of our crew, please comply with all directions.

Although lane closures will affect traffic for several months, the long‑term benefits will be:
- safer streets during heavy rain
- greater drainage capacity
- reduced time for stormwater to disperse
- reduced risk of water‑related impacts on the local road network
- better stormwater management.
