Council's response to homelessness
Homelessness can affect people from all walks of life and for many different reasons. People experiencing homelessness are among the most vulnerable members of our community.
For some people, homelessness means sleeping in public spaces such as parks, reserves and other community areas. These situations can be challenging for people experiencing homelessness, as well as for other community members who use and enjoy these spaces.
Council is committed to responding to homelessness in a supportive and respectful way. We work to support people experiencing homelessness while keeping public spaces safe, welcoming and accessible for everyone.
What is Council's role?
The Australian and Queensland governments are responsible for housing and homelessness services.
While Council does not provide housing or homelessness services, our role includes:
- Connecting people experiencing homelessness with local support services.
- Working alongside community organisations and government agencies to help connect people with the assistance they need.
- Advocating for more housing and homelessness responses to meet the need in our city.
- Managing and maintaining public spaces for everyone to use and enjoy.
- Responding to community concerns about public spaces and facilities.
Council works closely with homelessness services, community organisations and government agencies to support coordinated local responses. This includes connecting people with support services, sharing information and advocating for improved housing and homelessness outcomes across Logan.
Public Space Liaison Team
Council has established a dedicated Public Space Liaison Team to provide greater specialised and trauma-informed support for people experiencing homelessness in public spaces.
The team works directly with people experiencing homelessness to understand their circumstances, build relationships and connect them with support services when they are ready. They also work closely with local service providers and other agencies to help coordinate support and improve outcomes for vulnerable people.
Supporting our whole community
Council has a responsibility to both people experiencing homelessness and the broader community.
We recognise that everyone should be able to access and enjoy public spaces and facilities, and live in a safe and respectful environment. Our approach aims to balance the needs of people experiencing homelessness with the needs of residents, visitors, businesses and community members.
Where possible, Council focuses on engagement, support and connecting people with services. We believe working together with community organisations, service providers and government agencies is the best way to support people experiencing homelessness and create positive outcomes for our community.
