Water efficiency

Everyone in Logan needs to be careful about water use, even when we’re not experiencing a drought. Saving water can save you money and help the environment. For tips on saving water, please see Water saving tips at home.

Water use

If your water use is higher than usual, we can investigate it. Before contacting us, please check the information below, you may find an explanation for your increased water use.

  • Check how many days of water use you are being charged for. Your water usage charges are usually for 90 to 95 days. Sometimes, the water usage charges might be for more than 100 days. The timing of your meter reading depends on the weather conditions and other constraints. For help on how to read your meter, download our Water meters and water leaks factsheet(PDF, 111KB).
  • Seasonal changes influence water use. People tend to use more water during spring and summer than in autumn and winter. This can be because people water the garden more, top up a swimming pool or have extra showers.
  • Visitors, new tenants or an increase in the number of people living at your home can lead to higher water use.
  • Leaks in underground pipes or faulty plumbing and fixtures, like leaking toilets, can go unnoticed for a long time and can affect your water use. If you read your water meter every two weeks, you may be able to identify whether your usage has increased. If there is no reason for the increase, you should check for leaks.
  • Irrigation systems and tank top-ups. If you have an irrigation system that turns on automatically, you could be consuming thousands of litres of water each week. If you have a water tank that tops up automatically from the town water supply, you could use more water than you realise. We encourage you to check these systems regularly to make sure they are working correctly. Make sure your water tank only tops up to 10 or 15 percent of capacity, not to full, so that you leave room to collect rainfall.
  • If you regularly monitor your water usage by checking your water meter, you will be able to control your water use and make sure there are no surprises when you receive your rates notice.

Water efficient appliances and fixtures

Water efficient appliances can reduce how much water you use and save you money.

Look for appliances that show the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) label or text. You can visit the Smart Approved WaterMark and Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) websites for certified water-efficient services and more information.

The WELS label is designed to help you make informed choices about the water efficiency of the appliances you buy. Using the WELS label can make it easy to choose the most water-efficient option.
